DUALITY

DUALITY DUALITY

Overview

I approached Duality as an object rather than a sequence of pages. Toned photographs, gold surfaces and short poetic fragments are printed across three different papers and left unbound, so the order is never fixed. Each reader builds their own version of the book, and the work only exists once someone puts it together.

Methods

DUALITY DUALITY

Problem Definition

“A book usually decides the order for you; Duality hands that decision to the reader.”

Result

DUALITY 1
  • Torn Surface

    • The torn edge runs along the body, so the paper itself becomes part of the image.
    • I tore the prints by hand so no two edges are the same.
  • Two Temperatures

    • A cold blue tone sits against warm gold, the two sides of the book's title.
    • The contrast lets one figure read as two states at once.
  • Paper as Skin

    • Textured stock catches the light like skin, adding a physical layer to the photograph.
    • Choosing the papers was as much a design decision as choosing the images.
DUALITY 2
  • Darkness as a Page

    • Some spreads are almost entirely black, slowing the reader down.
    • I kept the shadows deep so the image has to be searched for, not just seen.
  • Layered Reading

    • Translucent sheets lie over the photographs, so every image is seen through another.
    • Changing the order of the sheets changes what the reader sees first.
  • Fragments, Not Captions

    • Short lines of text appear beside the images without explaining them.
    • The words open a second reading instead of closing the first.
DUALITY 3
  • No Binding

    • Without a spine, the pages can be shuffled, separated or spread out.
    • Every copy is assembled differently, so every reading is unique.
  • Limited Edition

    • Edition 001 was produced in a small run, each copy finished by hand.
    • The scale of the edition matches the intimacy of the work.
  • The Reader Completes It

    • The book only takes its final shape in the reader's hands.
    • That act of assembling is the duality the project explores.

Conclusion

Duality shows that a book can be a starting point rather than a finished statement: the reader completes the work.
